
Getting Infrared Preheating Right for Wide-Format Low-E Glass
If you’ve ever dealt with Low-E glass, you know the nightmare of spontaneous breakage during cutting. It usually comes down to one thing: the heat isn’t hitting the glass evenly. Now, that’s one thing when you’re working with standard sizes. But when you move into wide-format glass, those off-the-shelf lamps just don’t cut it. That’s where we come in. The struggle with 3+ meter spans
Here’s the thing about building a heater this long: voltage drop is a real pain. If you just string a bunch of short lamps together, you end up with “cold spots” at every junction. It’s a recipe for disaster. To fix this, we obsess over the wattage-per-centimeter. We map out the power density across the whole length so the glass hits the right temperature everywhere. No hot spots, no cold gaps. Just steady, reliable heat. One heads-up, though: keep an eye on your electrical load. When you’re pushing that much power across 3 meters, your wiring and power supply need to be beefy. Otherwise, you’re looking at burnt-out terminals.
Quartz tubes and the “bounce” effect
We house the filaments in high-purity quartz tubes, but the material is only half the battle. With Low-E glass, the infrared radiation has to actually sink into the glass. If the wavelength is off, the heat just bounces off the coating like a mirror. We can actually coat our tubes to shift that emission profile, making sure the heat penetrates deep instead of just reflecting away. And because factory floors aren’t exactly quiet, we use heavy-duty connectors. They keep the lamps from shaking loose when the machinery starts humming. The best part? These are basically drop-in replacements for most industrial heating tunnels. You can upgrade your width without tearing down your entire frame.
The trade-off (because there’s always one)
Longer lamps give you a smooth, consistent heat zone, but they’re a bit more temperamental. A 3-meter quartz tube is fragile. If your mounting brackets are even slightly crooked, the tube can snap. It’s frustrating and expensive. The trick is making sure your support structure is rock solid. If the frame flexes or sags, the tubes take the hit. Keep it rigid, and these things will last you a long time.
