
Keeping Bathrooms Warm Without Blinding the Kids
Designing a bathroom heater is basically one big balancing act. You want it to get hot—fast—but you can’t have it acting like a stadium floodlight in a small room. First, there’s the water issue. We stick to an IPX5 rating because, let’s be honest, bathrooms are wet. You need to know that if some water splashes or sprays on the unit, it’s not going to short out and leave you shivering in the dark. But the real headache? The light. Standard infrared lamps are blinding. If you’ve ever looked at one, you know that harsh, stabbing glare. Now, imagine a toddler looking straight up at that while you’re giving them a bath. Not a great feeling. To fix this, we change how the light behaves. We use special coatings on the quartz glass that act like a filter. They block out the blinding visible light and the nasty UV rays, but they let the actual heat pass right through. The result is a soft, warm glow. Your skin feels the heat, but the eyes stay safe. Under the hood, we use halogen-filled quartz tubes. They’re great for keeping a steady temperature, but they’re picky. We seal them into the housing with high-temp gaskets to keep the water out. If a seal leaks and moisture hits that hot glass? Crack. Simple as that. We also beef up the mounting brackets so the whole thing doesn’t rattle itself to pieces over time. Now, there is a catch. Filtering the light does take a little bit of the “oomph” out of the heat. You lose a tiny bit of efficiency compared to those raw, industrial lamps you’d see in a warehouse. To make up for it, we either bump up the wattage or tweak the reflectors to push the heat straight down where you actually need it. Just a heads-up: if you’re installing a few of these, check your breakers. These units pull a lot of power, and the last thing you want is the power cutting out mid-shower.
