Putting Infrared Heaters in Wet Zones: How to Actually Keep Them Safe
If you’re planning to put infrared heating lamps in a bathroom or a steamy sauna area, you can’t just slap a waterproof cover on them and call it a day. You’re mixing high voltage with moisture—and that’s a recipe for a bad time. To get a real IP55 rating, we have to obsess over two things: keeping the water out and making sure the electricity stays exactly where it belongs.
The nitty-gritty of IP55
An IP55 rating basically means the unit can handle dust and water jets hitting it from any direction. But here’s the thing: in a bathroom, it’s not just about splashes. It’s the steam. Steam is sneaky. It finds its way into the tiniest cracks. That’s why we use silicone gaskets and sealed cable glands. They act like a tight seal to keep the guts of the heater dry. But the real secret is the “potting.” We wrap the terminal connections in a high-dielectric compound. Think of it like a heavy-duty electrical cocoon. Even if some moisture manages to sneak past the outer shell, it can’t bridge the gap to the metal frame. No bridge, no ground fault. No sparks.
Dealing with the “Breathing” Problem
Infrared lamps get incredibly hot. Then they cool down. This creates a “breathing” effect where the air inside the heater expands and shrinks, which can actually suck humid air right through microscopic gaps. To stop this, we use pressure-equalizing vents. They let the air move freely but tell liquid water to stay out. We also use quartz glass tubes with reinforced end-caps. If those seals crack because of the constant heating and cooling, the internal wiring just burns out. Not ideal.
The trade-offs you should know about
Look, waterproofing isn’t free. It adds bulk. An IP55 heater is going to be a bit chunkier than a standard one because of all those seals and the heavier housing. You also lose a little bit of that direct, searing heat because of the safety guards we have to add. My advice? Go for a slightly higher wattage. It makes up for the heat lost to the shielding and keeps the room feeling just as cozy.
