
Why we put our bathroom heaters through the “steam torture test”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, wild temperature swings, and water vapor practically attacking everything in the room. If we just tested a lamp on a dry workbench and called it “good to go,” it would probably blow a fuse or burn out the second it hit a real shower. That’s why we don’t just hope for the best. We put every batch of our infrared heaters through brutal damp-heat aging tests. The hidden battle with humidity Here’s the thing about moisture—it doesn’t just stay on the outside. It sneaks. It creeps into the seals and finds its way into the electrical connections. The biggest danger zone is right where the wires meet the quartz tube. When water vapor gets in there, it causes oxidation. That creates resistance, which creates hotspots, and before you know it, the whole thing just stops working. To stop this, we use aging chambers. They basically trick the lamp into thinking it’s lived through years of steamy showers in just a few days. Pushing it to the breaking point We really lean into the stress tests. We cycle the lamps between scorching heat and saturated humidity, over and over. We’re looking for something called “creepage.” It’s basically when electricity starts jumping across the insulation because of a thin film of moisture. If the seal isn’t perfect, the halogen gas leaks out or the filament dies early. We check the insulation resistance at the end. If it’s even a little bit off? The whole batch goes in the trash. No exceptions. The trade-off you should know about Now, there is a catch. To get a seal this tight, the assembly has to be rigid. It’s great for keeping water out, but it means the lamps aren’t as “flexible” when you’re installing them. Because of this, you’ve got to make sure your fixtures are lined up just right. If you try to force a lamp into a warped socket, you might actually stress the very seal we spent hours perfecting. It’s a bit of a balancing act, but we’ll take a tight fit over a dead lamp any day.
